Evan Barbour • Biological Art
About
I practice two parallel forms of picture-making – biological illustration and fine art painting and assemblage. These two practices inform one another and often overlap.
As much as I practice art, I study the natural world, and am particularly fond of wild animals. I started painting birds in the early 2000s which soon resulted in a career as a bird illustrator. Hundreds of birds later, I still find this work fulfilling as both a creative expression and a means of sparking other’s interest in the lives of non-human species.
The attention to detail and accuracy so engrained from years of illustration carries over to my more imaginative fine art projects. But these conceptual works are unconstrained from objectivity or the intent to inform viewers inherent to scientific illustration. Whether through paint, photography or found-object assemblage, I build complicated messes reminiscent of organic (de)composition, seemingly chaotic at first glance, but with a subtle, balanced organization on closer inspection. These compositions try to emulate nature, a nature that’s been polluted by human influence.
In both practices, my aim is to draw you in, to look deeper. Hopefully, you’ll discover startling little moments pleasing to the eye, much in the same way we all may experience real, living environments.
Much of my work is for sale. Commissioned works may be arranged. All inquiries are welcome.
